Curacao Sunshine Getaway, Westpunt View On Map
Sunshine and David Livingston, the proprietors of Sol Food, made us feel so welcome that we actually ate there twice! The Livingstons describe themselves as "friends with food" and they are serious about this role. The Sol Food dining room is one and the same as the Livingston's backyard, and you feel more like a dinner party guest than a restaurant-goer eating there. Our first trip to Sol Food was on Sunday (our first day on the island). When I told Sunshine that I needed a gluten-free meal, she bemoaned the fact that she didn't have any more of her homemade gluten-free pumpkin bread to give me. After a delicious, homestyle meal (Ribeye, quinoa salad, tilapia, rice with veggies, and icecream with AMAZING homemade butterscotch sauce), Sunshine showed up with a plastic baggie full of gluten-free pecan butter candies for me to take home.

We decided to stop by Sol Food again on our way to the airport on our last day. Sunshine suggested we call ahead to place our order and it was ready for us when we arrived at noon. . This time, I not only got a new batch of candies from Sunshine, I also got a to-go container of rice and veggies (for the plane, Sunshine explained). Curacao is a beautiful, relaxing island, but I have to say that Sol Food really made the trip for me.

Landhuis Misje

We had heard that Landhuis Misje was one of the best restaurants on the island, so we decided to try it for dinner. Again, the entire dining room was situated outdoors, and we snagged the last walk-in table of the evening. We were seated in the back of the yard down a little gravel path from the rest of the diners at a quaint little kitchen table under a tree. Simon, a Dutch ex-pat who owned a scooter shop with his husband served us.

I explained my diet restrictions to him and he gladly took my Dining Card and spoke to the chef personally to make sure my dinner was safe. Island time again- the meal took us about 2 and a half hours, but it was well worth it! We had scallops and shrimp sauteed in spicy garlic butter and baby back ribs with savory coconut rice (all of which was naturally gluten free and so good). Simon even wrote down the album that was playing while we dined! A lovely, romantic evening altogether.
