The sterotypical Frenchman is cycling along with a stripy jumper and a baguette under his arm. Whilst those on a gluten free diet can still ride a bike and wear the jumpers, the French obsession with Pastries does appear a problem at first sight. Hopefully with us this doesn't have to be the case.

Des si et des mets is a completely gluten-free restaurant half way up the hill of Montmartre. We chose this restaurant because one of our party is coeliac and it is very difficult to get safe gluten-free food in France, especially if you don't speak fluent French.

The service was charming and the food delicious. The two non-coeliacs enjoyed it just as much as the one who needed gluten-free and said that they would never have realised that the food was gluten-free if they hadn't been told. The waitresses were busy, but very friendly and efficient.

The three-course set menu which costs 26 Euros per person, includes lots of home-made bread and desserts as well as tea or coffee, but items can be ordered separately if you don't want so much. A few items incur a small supplement - e.g. 2 Euros for a wonderful cheesecake. The menu is available in English and probably several other languages as well as French.

Our hotel reception rang to make a reservation. They were told that as two large parties were expected that evening, the restaurant couldn't guarantee a table for us, but if we liked to call about 7.30 perhaps they could fit us in. We went a little early and were given a table and served immediately.

When travelling in France my wife and I generally stop at the Campanile chain of hotels and motels. They are modest, two star hotels usually very near motorway exits but the meals are mostly help yourself buffets. This means we can cherry pick the items that suit us - my wife is allergic to dairy products (only from a cow). Most of the main dishes are OK provided I have them without the sauce or gravy, which always seem to include flour. Of course, I cannot eat the bread which is served everywhere but I am finding that more and more of the major supermarkets are stocking some gluten-free products - they are usually in the dietetic aisle - so as well as taking my own bread and toaster bags I usually stock up with some of the gluten-free breads that are not available in the UK.
