Starfish
Barnstaple, Devon View On Map
Starfish, caused a lot of interest when it first appeared on The Square in Barnstaple, North Devon. This was no regular chippy, oh no. With its stylish interior and branding, including quotes from Oscar Wilde brandished across the wall, this was a step up for our sometimes a little backwards town. Starfish was clean and classy, something a little bit fresh, yet offering decent, English grub. And so when one of the sales reps at my paper came rushing down with an advert stating Starfish would be offering gluten free nights on a Tuesday, well I was first in the queue. Braving the rain, I rushed down there and quizzed them on their offerings.

It would seem they have a whole range for both eat in and takeaway - and they keep a fryer separate to ensure that nothing is contaminated.

Being a newbie on the fish and chip scene, I asked what I should go for, and opted in the end for a regular cod and chips - a good starting point - with some mushy peas on the side. I was also told Starfish have sourced gluten free burgers, and will be offering gluten free bread rolls that have been made in the town. Dessert wise, there are two options on the restaurant menu - chocolate Sundae or pineapple fritters, though they are hoping to add another option. It seems they have really thought through what they can offer those with coeliac disease, and I think it's a move which will pay off in a fast-growing market.

After browsing through the menu my meal was ready and I hastily sped through the door, eager to get the wrapping off and see what surprises were in store. It was a pleasing sight - the portions were generous and it had just the right amount of salt. The fish looked golden and crispy, and the chips were that brilliant consistency where they're slightly crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The fish itself was beautiful - a delicate flesh with a crispy, crunchy batter. Every bite was satisfying, and I really enjoyed my fish and chip experience.

If you miss fish and chips, you simply must get to Starfish. There is no excuse not to - their range is impressive and their knowledge is brilliant - get down there or miss out!

The Riverbank
Bideford, Devon View On Map
It was Friday evening in a blind panic when I realised my Dad's birthday was just two days away, I was busy in the evening and I hadn't booked any sort of meal. A Sunday lunch seemed the obvious choice and I set about looking for somewhere in Bideford, North Devon. I've always driven past The Riverbank on my way to jobs in Bideford and thought it looked intriguing, but when I came across it on a Google search it seemed a good choice. That and the fact I was sure I had heard before they did gluten free food, so I went ahead and booked.

The bar/bistro itself was lovely - a fresh design inside, with a warm friendly feel and amazing views over the river - I can imagine with the French doors open in the summer months it would be lovely. The Riverbank has recently come under new ownership so I was intrigued to see how it fared. I asked if they could cater for gluten free (possibly a bit late, I realise, when I'm sat in there!) and was met with an enthusiastic yes from the waiter - 'I'll go and get the kitchen to start preparing your gravy,' he said. A very good start. Around the corner the delectable carvery spread stretched before us, in front of an open kitchen. I recognised the new owner, Lee Barker, serving up the impressive joints of meat. There was a choice of beef (a little pink, or well done - there were two joints to choose from), lamb, turkey or ham. Already I was impressed. Lee also explained what I could and couldn't eat. I was impressed to see his knowledge. Too often you are met by chefs who seem to know worryingly little about what actually goes into their meals. But every dish had a separate spoon, and everything was clear. They even bought me out my own cauliflower and broad beans without the white sauce. But most impressive of all was the gravy, Thick, yummy, meaty home-made gravy that was all MINE. Not watered down, crappy stuff. It was divine.

My, my, this carvery was amazing. The meat was tender and juicy, the veg was delicious - special shout out to the honey glazed parsnips (I hate parsnips, but these were so good!). Gluten free or not, I would certainly recommend this to everyone in the area.

Peter And That's Enough

In Ashby Square is the quirky Peter and that's enough pizza restaurant. They do gluten free pizza and calzone on request. Nice thin crust. The toppings were good, you could probably ask for cheese free and not lose anything if you were dairy free too.

Atlantic Fish Bar
Kingsbury, Staffordshire View On Map
The food and service was great - I had gluten free cod and chips, with my wife having the GF haddock and chips. We also shared some mushy peas and a good sized portion of battered onion rings. The onion rings were delicious and something I haven't eaten in ages! This was our second visit and we'd go back again.

Clementines
West Runton, Norfolk View On Map
My aunt and uncle who own a holiday flat in West Runton rave about this cafeé from a non-GF point of view. However, I was really impressed to see how much they stock for those on a Gluten Free diet when looking in their window. Unfortunately it was shut when we were there as the owners were at a family wedding but I will definitely check it out next time we visit the flat.

The Village Inn
West Runton, Norfolk View On Map
We were staying at my uncle's holiday flat in West Runton and after a nice morning on the beach decided to pop in to the Village Inn which backs on to the flat. We entered expectig the usual pub choice of Gammon or Steak so were pleasantly surpsised to find a good proportion of the menu marked as either GF or GFP (GF Possible on Request). I had a delicious half roast chicken basted in a piri-piri sauce whilst Mrs TGF had a Mariners pie. Both dishes were huge and well worth the money (as were the kids meals which are so far non-GF). We left full and very contented and given the holiday house access, I am sure we will be back again some time soon.
