It may be our home country but that doesn't mean that we can't travel around the country and still struggle to find somewhere catering to a gluten free diet. However, plenty of great places exist so hopefully you'll find the right one for you here.

Star Hotel & Bistro
Twynholm, Dumfries & Galloway View On Map
From the outside, an ordinary village pub - but a top class menu, all gluten free - even the sticky toffee pudding! We stayed overnight in one of the three (very pleasant, modern) rooms and enjoyed a lovely 3-course meal and full cooked breakfast. If we'd had time, we would have stayed longer and sampled the gf afternoon tea with cakes and scones!

The Griffin

Had a nice gluten free meal at The Griffin. For a starter I had the bubble & squeak, followed by the slow roasted dingley dell pork belly. No specific gluten free menu, but the waiting staff checked with the kitchen what was OK.

The Alex
Felixstowe, Suffolk View On Map
Had a great gluten free meal at The Alex brasserie in Felixstowe. There is plenty of choice on the gluten free menu and the food was delicious. I had the Roast monkfish, bacon, shallot & wild mushrooms and new potatoes, followed by the Dark chocolate mousse, bitter orange purée and Chantilly cream. We dined in the brasserie (there is a cafe/diner downstairs) and had great sea views from our table. We'll definitely be back.

The Crown
Henlow, Bedfordshire View On Map
We had a nice lunch at The Crown. As it was a lovely sunny day we sat in the spacious beer garden. The Chicken Supreme main and Chocolate Brownie I had for dessert were both good and there are is a good range of gluten free options. Unfortunately they had run out of the scallops starter I wanted which was a shame as it sounded great. The service was OK. I would definitely return.

Annie's Larder
Margate, Kent View On Map
Annie's Larder can arrange delivery of a variety of gluten free picnic and lunch orders to any of the beaches, or stations in Thanet. In advance of my trip to Margate I'd ordered and paid for the lunches online. I had two lunch orders delivered to me at Strokes Adventure Golf course in Margate where I was competing in the 2014 BMGA British Minigolf Championships. They arrived at 1pm and it was great to be able to eat a proper meal for my lunch, rather than just snacking. On the first day I had a Chicken & Bacon Sub (with freshly baked bread), a bag of Prawn Cocktail crisps and a Chocolate Cupcake. On day two I had a Falafel Sub with a salad, Prawn Cocktail crisps and a Lemon Polenta Cake. For Coeliacs travelling to Thanet I'd definitely recommend they put in a food order with Annie's Larder. Great food and service from a team that have an in-depth knowledge of coeliac disease, the strict gluten free diet and the needs of their customers.

The Ambrette
Margate, Kent View On Map
I really enjoy dining at The Ambrette. The staff are knowledgeable about gluten free and coeliac diners don't have to go without. Instead of Naan Bread they serve Dosa Pancakes. On this visit I had the chicken breast marinated in coriander and wild garlic, followed by the slow cooked leg of duck and spiced courgette. The meal is a real treat as diners are given a number of amuse-bouches in-between courses! My favourite this time was the wild nettle soup. Dining there is a great food experience. Well worth a visit for great food.

The Pearson's Arms
Whitstable, Kent View On Map
The Pearson's Arms does not have a specific gluten free menu, however they are able to adapt meals to make them gluten free if necessary. I've had two good meals there. On the latest occasion I had a Crab Salad starter and a Rob Eye Steak with Dauphinoise Potatoes for a main course. Both were tasty.
