It may be our home country but that doesn't mean that we can't travel around the country and still struggle to find somewhere catering to a gluten free diet. However, plenty of great places exist so hopefully you'll find the right one for you here.

The Quayside Fish & Chip Shop and Restaurant
Whitby, North Yorkshire View On Map
The Quayside Fish & Chip Shop and Restaurant has lots of gluten free options. The menu is clear and the prices are no different for GF options. They have specially marked up gluten free vinegar available and the tartare sauce is GF too. They've really gone all out to make sure people who need gluten free food are well catered for. I had fish & chips, a gluten free bread roll, tartare sauce and home-made mushy peas. I'll be back for more.

Clare's Gluten Free
Plymouth, Devon View On Map
Clare's Gluten Free have now opened a cafe/shop in Bretonside, Plymouth. The cafe is to my knowledge the only exclusively gluten free eatery in Plymouth, and I don't think there can be that many in the UK. Food is available to eat in or take away. There is a great range of food available, including warm pasties, pies and sausage rolls in the warmer ready for a quick takeaway. A safe gluten free fry-up can be very hard to find, and I can see me being a regular visitor with my dad for this alone. I went for this on Saturday and it was lovely. This will be a very convenient lunch stop for visitors to the Hoe and Barbican, gluten free or otherwise.

Browns Bar & Brasserie

Browns Bar & Brasserie in Birmingham do not have a dedicated gluten free menu and don't specify they can cater for Coeliacs, but there are some gluten free choices available. On my visit I had a rib eye steak, with mashed potato in place of chips.

The Queens Head
Maldon, Essex View On Map
We found The Queens Head pub to have plenty of gluten free options. All of the starters were OK (if the bread was removed), while there were four main course options and all of the desserts were OK. I chose the Confit Duck for a main which was delicious and very well prepared and cooked. The desserts were tempting so I opted for a Chocolate Chiffon Cake served with cream. This was also very good. My wife had the lamb steak and a cherry bakewell sponge (both gluten free) and said they were both good. The prices were very reasonable too. You can dine either in the main bar area, in the Port Hole dining room, or on the picnic benches outside. The pub and restaurant has some great views and is well worth a visit.

La Polentaria
Soho, London View On Map
La Polentaria has a great range of food for gluten free diners. The polenta main courses come in vegan, cheese, meat and fish varieties. I went for the the Wild Boar Stew Polenta which sounded interesting. It came in a good sized portion and was tasty. The polenta was a good base for the stew 'topping' and was a good texture and had a nice flavour. They also serve gluten free beer, although it was a bit pricy (but not more expensive than other 'normal' beers on the menu). So instead I had a coke and treated myself to a dessert. The chocolate coconut square was very very good indeed and something I will definitely order again. It wasn't overly coconutty, but was nice and chocolatey. I'll be returning for more polenta at La Polentaria soon.

Atlantic Fish Bar
Kingsbury, Staffordshire View On Map
We headed to the Atlantic Fish Bar in Kingsbury (between Birmingham and Tamworth) as we'd heard they offer gluten and wheat free options.

The Atlantic Fish Bar specialises in gluten free food on Monday's and has a very large menu catering for Coeliacs. Gluten free choices are available on other days and our visit was on a Saturday, but the choice of food available was still very good. The welcome we received was nice and warm too.

There is a separate counter and fryer for gluten free customers and orders and I asked what gluten free options were available. I had the choice of Fish & Chips, Sausage, homemade Fish Cakes, homemade curry sauce, and mushy peas.

I was feeling hungry so I opted for battered Cod & Chips, a fish cake and a curry sauce - something I haven't had from a chippy in years!

The food and service was brilliant and I will definitely go back. My wife had a 'normal' Haddock and Chips (and I let her have some of my curry sauce) and she thought the food was great too.

The meal was great. We ate-in at the counter by the window and were served our food on china plates. The fish bar was nicely busy during our visit with plenty of regulars popping in for their lunch.

The chips there were really tasty and the gluten free batter on the fish was nice and crunchy.

The curry sauce was a lovely addition - as was the provision of non-brewed condiment to splash on my lunch along with salt. This is something many fish & chip shops that provide gluten free options don't provide, instead leaving me to have just salt, as vinegar contains barley malt and is not suitable for all Coeliacs.

All in all it was a great meal and visit. I thoroughly recommend the Atlantic Fish Bar.

Percy's Hotel
Virginstow, Devon View On Map
I would highly recommend Percy's Hotel for gluten free food. We informed the owners in advance and when we arrived, tasty gluten free cake was on the table in our room ! The main meal was all gluten free and delicious ! Gluten free bread that had been made that day was served. You know not to ask, as you do in most restaurants/Cafes, if what you're going to eat is free from gluten as Christina's attention to detail and knowledge with regard to cooking gluten free is second to none.

Tung Shing
Knottingley, Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire View On Map
This is my local Chinese takeaway. The lady that owns it has catered many of her menu items to fit my gluten intolerance. She has been exceptionally supportive whilst working through her menu to see what I can and can't eat. She always has time to chat about the food and what the ingredients are. I mostly have the Singapore noodles without the gluten containing ingredients. but I have found in can have the ok sauce too so that has opened up my menu. A lovely tasty naughty treat now and again :)

Namaste India
Norwich, Norfolk View On Map
Namaste India is a delightful and completely vegetarian Indian restaurant, tucked away on Opie street in Norwich. The menu is varied and includes a very good selection of gluten-free dishes. The best and most authentic Indian food I've had since coming back from India five years ago. Service is faultless, attentive and welcoming. Don't hesitate to try this one- you won't be disappointed! I'd recommend booking as it's a small restaurant and they are very popular, and rightly so in my opinion!

While on a recent walk around Angel my wife noticed on the sign outside Pho that they had Gluten Free options. We asked the staff and they said that most of the menu would be fine so we decided to dine there. We had a great meal with starters and a main. The Pho was huge, but I managed to eat and drink it all :-) I'll definitely be heading back to a Pho again.
