Siem Reap
The Passage, Siem Reap View On Map
Chamkar is a vegetarian restaurant down "The Passage" in the tourist centre of Siem Reap. Run by a Frenchman who has lived in Cambodia for several years and is into promoting organic, local produce, the restaurant serves up vegetarian versions of traditional Khmer dishes, giving visiting veggies the opportunity to get a taste of the local cuisine.

When I saw the menu regretted that I'd missed out on my first opportunity to eat there, because the food is delicious and there were so many things I wanted to try. So, I started with fresh spring rolls, which came with a fantastic peanut, coconut milk, and chilli dipping sauce that I still think about. Filled with green mango, fried yam bean, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, and herbs. I was torn on what to have for the main, but settled on the Cambodian Pumpkin Melody - stir-fried pumpkin and pineapple with yellow curry paste and coconut milk, which came with a separate bowl of steamed rice, because I love pumpkin in any form. After that I was sadly too stuffed for dessert.

On my second visit I talked for a while with the owner, who is regularly at the restaurant and takes the time to chat with diners. I'd also seen him there on the first night. Another nice touch for an excellent, quality restaurant. It's expensive by Siem Reap standards, but dirt cheap considering what you'd pay if it was in a Western country, and well worth it.
