Tortilla Real Maya

My husband and I were backpacking through Belize and Mexico and on our last week we ended up in Isla Muejeres. After getting off the ferry we crossed the street and decided to eat At Tortilla Real Maya... and wow! it was amazing... and to my surprise it said "Gluten Free" on the store front! I was so I excited since I have coeliac and I was never guaranteed safe food while travelling (although it was very easy to stay gluten free in Mexico) They make the organic corn totilla"s from scratch on a clay hot plate and then you have 10 choices of the different kinds they serve. I think we ate there everyday because they were so good! The cost was only about $3 canadian and you get unlimited organic tangerine or hibiscus juice. My favorite was #6 it was organic beef, olives and raisins. I can't rave enough how good their food was. I miss it so much!

Both my wife and me found this place by pure luck and it ended up being our regular lunch restaurant.

If you want to taste something different go there. If you want to go back home with a cool story of how you ate a real Mexican tortilla go there. If you want a cheap healthy creative fix that's the place for you.

We tried the entire menu and lived each one of it. The coolest thing of all is that it's gluten free as well with all organic products used.

The Royal Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen, Yucatan Peninsula View On Map
My wife and I stayed at the Royal PDC for our 10th Anniversary. We spent months reading about the resort and found most of what we read to be true. The staff works very hard to make your visit a great one. If you need to eat Gluten Free this is a great resort choice!

The food service staff and the concierge (Veronique and Fernando) were very helpful with my gluten intolerance. Rene the chef at Asiana made some wonderful dishes. Pelicanos and Tapas were great lunch spots to sit near the ocean. Chicken Taco's were great at Tapas. The food everywhere was great. If you don't find something you like on the menu just ask and they will make it.

The new section is great and underused. It really is not that far of a walk. We stayed right by the main pool and went over there every day for a meal or drink. This area is a nice addition to the resort. It is almost like two different resorts, which is a good change of pace.

Overall the Royal was a great place to stay. The staff worked hard to make sure we enjoyed our stay. They were very accommodating.

Azul Beach Hotel, by Karisma
Puerto Morelos, Yucatan Peninsula View On Map
We found this hotel when looking for a small 5* hotel in Puerto Morelos with 'a la carte' selection of meals to accomodate a coeliac disease. My first gluten free order at the Asian restaurant immediately brings Chef Luis Zaragoza to our table smiling at the challenge ahead of him. Trained on the restrictions caused by coeliac conditions, he pointed me to everything on the menu he could rapidly adapt and offered to prepare anything else I would like to eat from the Mexican or more North American type of food on the menu of the other two restaurants. During the entire week, Luis or one of his two sous-chefs Mariano and Sergio suggested a choice of breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and prepared gluten-free meals, frying nachos in separate oil, refried beans or salsas, lobster, mahi-mahi, etc., all with highest freshness and quality offered by 5 stars restaurants - and gluten-free. Eventhough the hotel was full and two wedding took place while we were there, one of these three individuals took the time to discuss with me prior to preparing each meal, demonstrated deep knowledge of each ingredient they used, were professionals and always seemed to enjoy the challenge. I felt extremely secure, could choose from a number of things to eat and never felt it was extra work for the Chef, although believe me, I know it is. The hotel was beautiful, the beach superb and snorkeling at 500 meters from the hotel reminded us of famous Jean-Jacques Cousteau's documentaries. Entertainment from young Jorge is a demonstration of the whole sense of ''all-inclusive''. He showed particular talent at entertaining everyone, adapting activities to all ages/personnalities.
