GLUTEN FREE PIZZA. HAPPY HOUR. I reckon that's all I have to say about this golden gem of a place. You could choose any pizza toppings on a gluten free deep pan base, free from cross contamination. Even a bacon double cheeseburger pizza!
I decided to go for the Sicilian, consisting of pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers, cheese and tomato sauce. The pizzas were quite expensive but it was honestly maybe the best gluten free pizza I've had that has a thicker base so was 100% worth it! They even provided me with a little garlic butter dip once I saw it on the menu, my favourite (and a bit unhealthy) dip ever for pizza dipping. Due to it being conveniently happy hour when we arrived, I also treated myself to a strawberry daiquiri.

On our last day, we decided to take a walk within the hotel's local proximity and to my surprise, I came across a 'Sem Gluten' sign at the first restaurant we stumbled upon. It was literally a two minute walk away. This was a burger place so I was very happy, another treat for me! The waitress was very understanding and knowledgeable about gluten free food, Coeliac Disease and cross-contamination so I was instantly eased when ordering. Her dad even went out to get suitable chips for me that he knew were completely safe for me to eat, and they cooked these in a seperate fryer to normal.
I went for a Hawaiian burger with chicken breast, pineapple, bacon. I paid 2 Euros for the gluten free bun but my family said they liked the look of mine more than theirs (which made a change).

I can recommend Gelato And More in the centre of Funchal, Madeira by the cable car station. Extensive gf menu and the staff are very clued up....when I asked if the gf pizzas were cooked separately he just told me very nicely and politely not to worry!!

Sabores do Churrasco
Chain View On Map
Seems to be a chain, but it has a twist on buffet dining. There is a salad bar with various fresh items (beware the obvious non gf stuff pasta salad, banana fritters etc). There are also hot items (the rice and the black beans are ok although they don't guarantee the chips). The meats come on skewers which are carved at the table for you and all are gluten free even the sausages!! Eat as much as they are prepared to give you then the best comes near the end of the meal. Barbecued pineapple covered in cinnamon!!! Delicious!! There are various selections of menu which restrict the meats you are entitled to but all include the salad bar. Not sure about the desserts. Didn't have room!!

Senhor Frogs
Albufeira, Algarve View On Map
Before taking off, I had a super quick Google of 'gluten free Albufeira' and to my delight a restaurant called Senhor Frogs popped up on Trip Advisor, saying they did gluten free pizzas!! Well, of course we had barely landed and I was already trying to figure out where it was! Luckily for us, our hotel was located on the beach in Albufeira, a 5-10 minute walk from either Old Town or The Strip - where Senhor Frogs was located!

Luckily, I had read on the review that if you want a GF pizza, you have to order it earlier in the day so they can prepare the dough - so we stopped by at lunchtime to make our order for dinner. I was really pleased to see the signs outside clearly advertising the fact they did gluten free pasta, and I went to speak to the waiter who was very nice and told me my pizza dough would be awaiting me at 7pm that night! That night I was excited to choose my pizza from their vast range - a little over priced for Albufeira (I think mine cost me around 16 Euros) but I chose one with pepperoni, ham, peppers, mushrooms and olive. When it got placed in front of me I was so excited - it was huge and stuffed with toppings, I couldn't wait to get stuck in! I was really impressed by the base - it was quite a thick base but really light and unlike any I have had before - it was so tasty. The best thing about Senhor Frogs was that when I couldn't finish the whole thing, they even let me take it home and they told me they would put it in a different box to my friend's leftovers, so it wouldn't get contaminted. Brownie points for them!

The English Kitchen
Albufeira, Algarve View On Map
First time visit to Albufeira and was concerned about eating out as I am a coeliac. Read reviews on English Kitchen before going away. Great place, Sue and Doreen were always bright and cheerful and extremely helpful and understanding of my dietary requirements. I had a beautiful meal every night and Steve made my chips in a separate pan for me. I would highly recommend this venue for anyone who cannot eat gluten or wheat. Thank you all so much for making my holiday so enjoyable and safe to eat.

Quinta dos Poetas

From the first email till the day we left the communication with Margarida, Rosario and all the other members of their family and staff was great. I am a Coeliac and they went out of their way to make sure I had an equal enjoyable breakfast as the rest of their guests. At the end of our stay I was presented with a bag full of leftover cakes, bread and muesli, which was such a help as we had to stop at restaurants and hotels on our way back in our hired car to Madrid. Their restaurant on the other side of their beautiful gardens (including a golf course) was also superb and we enjoyed several lunches and dinners there. Many other guests used their hotel as a base during a cycle holiday and had day trips around the beautiful area of Algarve. I would love to return for another holiday, but we live in Australia so it might not happen, but we treasure the experience.

Pestana Casino Park Hotel
Funchal, Madeira View On Map
We took a last minute deal and were delighted with our choice. My wife suffers from coeliac disease and therefore requires gluten free meals. We went half board and the chef was happy to prepare a suitable alternative. The hotel facilities are excellent and it is within easy reach of the town. It seemed strange in such a good hotel to have to hire a kettle for the week--not expensive Euro4, but a bit odd.

We were very happy with our stay and would definitely stay there again. Free internet in room, hotel supplied the necessary cable.
