Columbia Restaurant
Sarasota, Florida (FL) View On Map
We drove to St. Armands Circle, for lunch at the Columbia Restaurant, having researched it had a gluten-free menu. The original Columbia located in historic Ebor City (home of the cigar makers/Tampa) was founded (1905) by a Cuban immigrant and has been acknowledged with many restaurant awards for its Spanish cuisine. The St. Armands venue has a charming mediterranean-style interior dining area as well as an outdoor area and both were packed with assumingly holiday travelers visiting the circle's upscale boutiques and specialty gift shops. Our server, a sweet and very accommodating Hungarian woman, pointed out several items which were considered gluten-free. (Tip: Just ask for the "printed" gluten-free list, it is easier to order from). Gluten-free items included soups, salads, and a few meat, poultry & fish dishes (they have gluten-free paella!).

I began with a glass of refreshing homemade Sangria, followed by an entree of Mahi Mahi "Cayo Hueso" marinated in citrus juices and served with mojo marinated onions, accompanied by yellow rice with red peppers and plantains. Delicious and reasonable.

Island GF Bakery
Sarasota, Florida (FL) View On Map
Tucked in a non-descript retail strip, the Island's owners Karen, Vickie and Kim were among the first bakers to use whole grains and no white rice flours in their gluten-free baking. The bakery sells their signature "Stellar" brand of gfree mixes, named for both its quality, and also in honor of Stella Peters, a newly diagnosed celiac who (back in 2006) asked the bakers to make something gluten-free for her, which eventually led to the bakery becoming a 100% dedicated gluten-free facility. There are a few tables to sit and enjoy whichever gluten-free delight you've selected from The Island's variety of muffins, scones, cookies, cakes, pies and delicious homemade breads, buns, rolls, French loafs, pizza crust and granola. Dairy-free, casein-free and vegan options available as well as daily sandwiches/subs and quiche specials. The Island's two freezers are stocked with take-away gluten-free pizza, lasagna, chick pot pie, cinnamon roll, pie crusts, bread crumbs/croutons and waffles, convenient if you are staying in accommodations with a kitchen. I couldn't pass up the slice of Key Lime Pie that was calling out to me which was hands down the best Key Lime Pie I've tasted, gluten-free or otherwise. I grabbed a loaf of Cranberry Orange Raisin bread ($8.99) on my way out, which was fresh and delicious!

Truffles Grill
Winter Park, Florida (FL) View On Map
Winter Park, FL has many restaurants that do gluten free right. Truffles Grill is one that I have been too several times and each time I have had a wonderful experience. They have an extensive gluten free menu and even serve gluten free bread before the meal.

Truffles is located next door to Chamberlin's Market and Cafe. It is one of our specialty stores in the Orlando area that carries a large variety of gluten free items, organic foods, vitamins and other specialty foods. Truffles Grill offers gluten free appetizers, salads, main dishes including a gluten free pasta dish, burgers, sides and a dessert. They will hand you a simple print out of their gluten free offerings when you enter the restaurant. It is easy to read, but you do have to check the prices on the main menu if you are concerned about the price. They state on the bottom of the menu that their french fries are not gluten free, nor is their soy sauce or barbecue sauce.

On our first visit I ordered the spinach salad with apples, pecans, goat cheese and the poppy seed dressing. This salad is fresh and delicious. I have ordered it twice now. I am usually a creature of habit when I find something I really enjoy and this salad is definitely one of those. The bread is from French Meadow Bakery. It is soft and buttery tasting yet dairy free. It is certified by The Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO), a program of The Gluten Intolerance Group. It contains eggs and is manufactured on equipment with soy.

I have yet to go to Truffles for dinner. I like to go to restaurants for an early lunch because I feel like I will have a better chance of getting a meal that really is gluten free. Since I have had a few good experiences here I think the next visit needs to be a date night - sans kids. The inside of the restaurant is modern yet warm and comfortable and the patio is enjoyable whether it is warm or cool outside.

Paradiso 37
Lake Buena Vista, Florida (FL) View On Map
Before heading over to Babycakes in Downtown Disney we dined at Paradiso 37, a restaurant on the water in Downtown Disney. We opted for outdoor seating to take advantage of the terrific weather and to have a view of the water. The menu looked like it had good gluten free options, and when I told the waitress of my allergy she told me to take a look at the menu before the chef came over to discuss my options. I'm not used to being waited on with such a personal touch and, sure enough, the chef came over a few minutes later to talk about my options. Before eating we were asked to switch tables and were promised two free drinks to thank us... and who are we to say no to free drinks? Paradiso has a large drink menu and enormous bar space both of which we took advantage of while downing some delicious margaritas.

I can't seem to find a menu online, but I remember that we both ordered the enchiladas. My enchiladas, however, would be prepared differently because they are normally lightly fried before being served. The chef assured me that they would be just as delicious without the last minute fryer action but would have a different taste. When we received our dishes, I asked Traivor to do a taste test comparison. After trying his dish and my dish (the same except for the fryer), he decided that he liked my dish more! I was happy to show him that gluten free food doesn't have to taste different and can in fact be better. He had his first taste of this at Nizza where he fell in love with the restaurant's gluten free bread, but it's always good to reinforce the idea.

The Bald Strawberry
Cape Canaveral, Florida (FL) View On Map
If you live here or are visiting the Central Florida area and you are craving a "gluten free beach day" this is where you want to go! The owners of the shop, Linda and her "apprentice" son, Joseph, are as warm and inviting as all the goodies within. On this visit they were serving both gluten items and gluten free, but had two separate kitchens, which made me feel extra safe in eating their food items. Since then they have gone completely gluten free....they have obviously become quite a hit! : ) I, as I am sure many others have felt this feeling too....felt like I had found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that afternoon.

I purchased several items. A loaf of bread, some gooey chocolate bars, chocolate chip cookies and snickerdoodle cookies. The bread was moist and very tasty.... and it had been quite some time since I had enjoyed a slice of delicious soft bread with butter so I was in heaven. It was perfect to enjoy with dinner that night and for sandwiches during the week.

Linda and Joseph serve delicious sandwiches and pizza....and even a breakfast pizza. You can choose from several bread types as well as try one of their 3 sandwiches: The Joe Cool, The V Club, or the Rockin Rueben, or build your own. I chose to have a turkey with avocado, red onion, spinach, fresh basil and provolone cheese.

The front room of The Bald Strawberry is set up with a few tables and bar stools for you to sit and enjoy some coffee and sweets. Linda has also decorated 3 separate rooms with comfy seats and different themes for you to sit and enjoy some coffee, tea and sweets or wait there while your sandwich or pizza is being made/cooked for you.

So whether you live in the Central Florida area or are visiting the theme parks or taking a cruise....and gluten free....The Bald Strawberry is a delicious, warm and fuzzy, 100% gluten free bakery with awesome ambiance and wonderful owners. ?You will want to come back again and again.

Matanzas Innlet Restaurant
Saint Augustine, Florida (FL) View On Map
When we go on a trek somewhere I always have to preplan on where I can safely eat. I don't have to do that when going to Palm Coast. This was probably our fifth visit and each time we come we make a stop for lunch at The Matanzas Innlet Restaurant. If you are in the St. Augustine area and are looking for a delicious and safe gluten free meal this is where you want to stop. The Restaurant has a separate area where they prepare the gluten free food and their menu has several appetizers, soups and varied meals (seafood, tacos, pizza and pasta), as well as a dessert. The pasta used is a rice pasta and make sure you specify gluten free corn tortillas for the tacos. The gluten free meals were added to the menu by one of the owners, who was diagnosed with celiac. All the staff have been trained to avoid cross contamination. It's sometimes amazing what happens when you have been gluten free for a bit and have been limited on your choices for appetizers, dinner and desserts. All of a sudden you find yourself ordering desserts when you have not in years. Thank goodness we were going to get some exercise after this on the rocky beach!

Vertoris Pizza House
Bradenton, Florida (FL) View On Map
Vertoris is definitely more than a pizza house. We think the owners should change the name to Vertoris - a Coeliac's Delight! Yes, they do serve a variety of gluten, vegan & dairy-free pizza, but their menu offers a wide assortment of gluten-free (as well as MSG, vegan, & dairy-free) options. GF menu items include: (appetizers) Turkey Chili, Buffalo Wings, Organic Eggplant, French Onion Soup, Foccacia bread with roasted Garlic Butter; (entrees) a "signature" Chicken Parmesan and Eggplant Parmesan; meat (or meatless) Lasagna, and Cheese Ravioli Florentine with organic baby spinach... and for dessert try the NY Style cheesecake (dairy-free version available), Tiramisu, Key Lime Pie or a delicious muffin of the day! GF beer also available. Owner Christine Harmon introduced gluten free items to Vertoris' menu after a friend was diagnosed with Coeliac. If you are in or near Bradenton and looking for delicious gluten-free food made with healthy ingredients, do not pass this one up! Interior is small, casual, and family friendly. The servers are pleasant and efficient.

Island Gluten Free Bakery
Sarasota, Florida (FL) View On Map
Island Gluten Free Bakery is a delightful little gluten-free bakery located just off of Siesta Key in Sarasota. This was a very pleasant experience and we look forward to eating there again and again. We tasted their carrot cake, cinnamon rolls, and pumpkin muffins. Yummy!

We decided to split an egg salad sandwich, only we wanted to try it on a hoagie roll. They were all too happy to accommodate us. We had a seat and they brought it out when it was ready. Their bread is phenomenal! I was a bit jealous. Unlike some store bought breads that I've tried, these were soft and held together great.

The owners were very personable and friendly. I recommend that when in Sarasota, you give them a try.

The Breakers
Palm Beach, Florida (FL) View On Map
I have just returned from 4 glorious days at The Breakers hotel in Palm Beach, Florida. I am here to tell you that this hotel is off the hook (that means it's incredible). Picture a gorgerous old construction hotel, some of the best customer service I've ever experienced, an incredible beach, 4 pools, and more gluten free options than I could possibly try in 4 days... among other things.

The menu at "The Beach Club", which indicates gluten free options with a "GF". I had the chicken skewer lettuce wraps. I wanted to order room service for lunch and didn't see anything gluten free on the room service menu. Then I spoke to the girl at the room service number who said they could do ANY OF THEIR SANDWICHES on gluten free bread. What a dream. I had a reuben... Also, I was concerned about the fries not being deep fryed in a dedicated fryer... so she asked the kitchen to heat up some new oil for my fries. Heaven.

Breakfast continues to be every coeliac's biggest challenge when on the road. The Breakers always had a variety of fruit and yogurts for me... and I noticed this morning that the Odwalla juice I had is actually labelled gluten free. Awesome!
